Quarantine is proven to be a valuable preventative measure but whether chilling and heating should be applied during the isolation period and how long this should last depends on the origins and history of each newly purchased Koi and such decisions are for the individual hobbyist, but should be based on facts.

Koi Herpesvirus (KHV) is a serious disease causing high mortalities and it creates consequences for Koi that survive it. However some speculation and comment about the disease in circulation is inaccurate from the biological and scientific viewpoint. Diagnosis is not possible in the pond and many suspected cases turn out to be other health problems. It is important to get the risk in perspective as viruses are part of nature and a fact of life all for all living things. All any Koi-keeper can do is minimise every possible risk not just of their Koi contracting KHV but any serious disease by quarantining new Koi irrespective of any previous dealer quarantine period or health certification .
